The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) prohibited Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, from increasing flight frequency.
The restriction will be maintained until the terminal’s concessionaire, GRU Airport, resolves problems found by Anac that, according to the agency, put the safety of operations at risk. The measure was published through the ordinance No. 14,734 this Tuesday (4).
During the validity of the precautionary decision, the airport will only be able to carry out up to 2,714 weekly commercial flights.
If the irregularities are not resolved within 60 days, the number of flights allowed will be reduced by 5%.
Anac stated, in a statement, that the agency’s biggest concern is the safety of aircraft on the aprons, especially during night operations and in rainy weather.
According to the Agency, the concessionaire was notified and fined in two inspections, but did not resolve the problems highlighted. Among them are:
- Maintenance failures in horizontal signage on aircraft aprons;
- Lack of actions to revitalize horizontal signage in general;
- Failures in the supervision of operations in the yard;
- Failures in the maintenance of light signaling circuits.
All of these defects can make it difficult for pilots to see and create unsafe situations during night flights or in the event of rain, according to Anac.
GRU Airport informed the CNN which considers the precautionary decision that restricts the increase in its capacity to be disproportionate, as it has been implementing the action plan agreed with Anac to improve infrastructure, without risk to operations and, therefore, trusts in the rapid review of this decision.
