Former Foreign Minister Analena Berbok will officially assume today’s duties of President of the UN General Assembly. This position will be succeeded by the predecessor of Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, at the start of the 80th Synod of the General Assembly in New York. Berbock was elected to this June by a sweeping majority, despite Russia’s campaign with the aim of derailing its candidacy. The 44 -year -old politician of the Greens Party, who served until May as German Foreign Minister, is only the fifth woman who occupies the position of President of the UN General Assembly. The position is largely ceremonial and should not be confused with the role of UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres. As President, Berbock will chair the meetings of the General Assembly and help to determine the agenda and procedural rules for meetings. Source: RES
