Political instability in South Korea could impact both the geopolitical power and economy of the United States, according to military analyst at CNN Cedric Leighton.
“This is a dangerous time, because any instability in South Korea will affect (the US) ability to project military power in the Indo-Pacific,” he declared.
Thousands of US troops are in South Korea. The US also has “a lot of commercial and economic ties in South Korea”, highlighted Leighton.
“This instability is something that is not only worrying, but could also have an impact on world markets. It could have an impact on (the US) ability to conduct military operations not only in Asia but also in other parts of the world,” he added.
South Korean stocks fell after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared Martial Law in the country.
Yoon Suk Yeol followed the South Korean Parliament’s vote and suspended the measure he imposed earlier.
