Iran on Tuesday (13) rejected calls from European countries for moderation towards Israel, but according to analyst Lourival Sant’Anna, the country does not want to enter into an all-out war with the Jewish state.
According to Sant’Anna, Iran prefers a strategy of indirect conflict, using proxy actors such as Hezbollah, the Houthis and Hamas.
“Iran does not want an all-out war with Israel. It prefers an indirect war through proxy actors,” the expert said.
Tensions and murders
The analyst also commented on the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Beirut.
Sant’Anna called the attack “outside the rules of war” since Haniyeh was a political leader and not a military commander.
“That is why Netanyahu cannot take responsibility for this murder, because it does not comply with the rules of war, it is a murder that is a crime, which can lead to prosecution,” explained Sant’Anna.
Strategies and interests
The expert stressed that both Iran and Israel seek to keep the conflict at a “controlled intensity.”
According to him, an all-out war is not in the interests of either side, as it could lead to a regional escalation with the participation of other actors such as Hezbollah and the Houthis.
“What people do in the Middle East is save face, not be humiliated, give the appearance of reacting, of responding appropriately and carrying out their own strategic intentions,” concluded Sant’Anna, highlighting that Iran uses the conflict with Israel as justification for its actions in the region.
