International analyst Lourival Sant’Anna assesses that Iran is not prepared for a direct war with Israel, despite recent tensions in the region. The statement was made during the CNN Prime Time amid new Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
According to Sant’Anna, if Iran had been ready for a direct confrontation, “it would have already started one, after repeated humiliations, including one that occurred across the entire Iranian territory, the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh on the day of the Iranian president’s inauguration.”
The analyst’s comment comes after Iran’s embassy in Beirut stated that the Israeli attacks “change the rules of the game” and warned that Israel would be punished.
However, Sant’Anna believes these statements are more rhetorical than indicative of imminent military action.
Intensified attacks in Beirut
During his participation in the program, new explosions were recorded live in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Sant’Anna described the images: “This was most likely a missile that landed there. […] Israel is bombing south Beirut and it’s, I think it’s most likely missiles now.”
The analyst explained that the Israeli attacks target Hezbollah, a group supported by Iran.
“The Hezbollah headquarters in the south of Beirut and the buildings around it, they most likely store Hezbollah explosives, missiles, ammunition. This is how Hezbollah operates,” he said.
Hezbollah “beheading” operation
Sant’Anna highlighted that Israel is carrying out a “decapitation” operation on Hezbollah, aiming to eliminate important leaders of the group.
“Since Monday, attacks have been targeting leaders of the group,” he said, mentioning the deaths of commanders such as Fuad Shukri and Ibrahim Aqil.
According to Israeli information cited by the analyst, the attacks would have managed to eliminate commanders of 30 Hezbollah battalions and five brigades, representing a significant blow to the organization’s command structure.
Sant’Anna warned, however, of the likely civilian victims of these attacks, recalling his experience covering previous conflicts in the region: “The number of deaths is much higher, I remember arriving in these places shortly after bombings in 2006, and in fact, During bombings, I continued bombing, and it was a smell of burning flesh, a very strong smell of death.”
The situation in Lebanon remains tense, with the possibility of escalating the conflict. Meanwhile, the international community is closely watching developments, fearing a regional expansion of the crisis.
