International analyst Lourival Sant’Anna detailed during the CNN Prime Time the significant differences between the Iranian attacks against Israel that took place in April and the most recent one, carried out this Tuesday (1st).
According to Sant’Anna, the April attack was considered a strategic response to the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
The current attack is described as a “more robust and brutal” response by Iran, in retaliation for the murder of a senior official and the bombing of Hezbollah, the main irregular armed group supported by the country.
Overload of Israeli defense systems
The analyst explained that this time, Iran launched approximately 180 ballistic missiles almost simultaneously, overwhelming Israel’s defense systems.
This tactic differs significantly from the April attack, when there was a gradual escalation, allowing Israel to better prepare.
“This time, as you say, there were 180 ballistic missiles fired almost simultaneously. And that’s why they actually got some of them through the Arrow and the other layers, David’s Sling [estilingue de David] and even the Iron Dome,” said Sant’Anna.
Israeli defense systems and their limitations
Sant’Anna detailed Israel’s three main defense systems: the Arrow, designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles; David’s Sling, for medium-range threats; and the Iron Dome, intended for short-range rockets.
Despite the effectiveness of these systems, the analyst highlighted that the volume and simultaneity of Iranian attacks managed, to a certain extent, to overcome Israeli defenses. “Iran managed to overload the system,” he noted.
Escalation potential and limitations
Sant’Anna warned of the potential for conflict to escalate, noting that Iran has an arsenal of around 3,000 ballistic missiles.
However, he also highlighted the limitations that prevent a large-scale attack, citing Israel’s ability to retaliate, including with nuclear weapons.
“Israel is a nuclear power. It would obliterate Iran from the face of the earth with nuclear weapons, which I really hope will never happen,” said the analyst, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the need for containment on both sides to avoid a catastrophic escalation of the conflict.
