The new Republican vice presidential nominee is the embodiment of Trump’s “America First” policies. Senator JD Vance is part of a new generation of pro-Trump lawmakers who reject traditional wisdom on U.S. foreign policy.
Earlier this year, he traveled to the Munich Security Conference to rebuke America’s European allies. And at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the US, he explained why the United States should no longer fund Ukraine’s fight for freedom.
“I have… Republican colleagues who are far more emotionally invested in what’s happening 6,000 miles away than they are in their own country,” Vance said at the conference.
He defends Trump’s stance that the war in Ukraine must end and the killing must stop.
“It’s good for the country to have someone say, ‘How long is this going to go on? How much money should we funnel into this country?’” said Vance, who also argued that the U.S. does not have enough manufacturing capacity or military reserves to send more ammunition to Ukraine.
“If you care about Ukraine, but most of all if you care about the United States, you should want this issue to come to a diplomatic solution.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rebuked Vance’s criticism of the war in an interview with Kaitlan Collins of CNN in February.
“To understand this, one must go to the front lines to see what is happening, talk to people and then go to the civilians to understand… what will happen to them without this support. And he will understand that millions… will be killed. This is a fact,” Zelensky said.
“Of course he doesn’t understand. God bless him for not having war on his territory,” he said.
