The International Analyst of CNN Lourival Sant’anna criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) reaction to the results of the elections in Venezuela. According to Sant’Anna, Lula, together with the leaders of Colombia and Mexico, is giving Nicolás Maduro’s regime time to forge new voting records that prove his victory. The presidential elections took place last Sunday (28).
According to Lourival, “they are giving time for the Maduro regime and the National Electoral Council to clean up the evidence of the minutes that give victory to the opposition candidate Edmundo González and replace them with forged minutes.”
The analyst highlighted that the Venezuelan opposition, aware of the regime’s tactics, is already expecting Maduro to present results that “prove” his victory. Sant’anna argued that the stance of Lula and other Latin American leaders contributes to creating a false equivalence between the groups involved in the electoral process.
Criticism of Lula’s stance
Sant’anna specifically criticized Lula’s statement that there is a “fight between two groups” in Venezuela. “It’s like saying that Ukraine and Russia are in a fight, when Ukraine was invaded by Russia,” the analyst compared.
The expert also pointed out that Lula ignores the fact that, for eight and a half years, “the Venezuelan justice system has been working in favor of the regime.” By suggesting that the opposition resort to the courts, the Brazilian president would be disregarding this reality, says Sant’anna.
The analyst concluded by warning of the risk of comparing the Brazilian judicial system to the Venezuelan one, stating that this puts “our system on the same level as Venezuela”.
