On the eve of the midterm elections in the United States, all signs point to a good result for the Republicans, which would lead to a change in control of the House and, possibly, the Senate.
And that is very good news for Donald Trump.
While the former president was an uneven presence in the 2022 campaign, what you can be sure of is that if his party gets good numbers, he’ll be at the front of the line to take the credit.
He has endorsed and held rallies for all sorts of Republican candidates, while only recently began running ads on his behalf through a super PAC.
“How Trump Considers Using a Potential ‘Red Wave’ [vitória de muitos republicanos] As a backdrop for the launch of his presidential campaign, some Republicans said he is likely to demand more credit than he should,” reported Gabby Orr of CNN in a recent report on Trump and his ambitions for 2024.
Which makes perfect sense – because that’s what Trump does.
He has repeatedly claimed credit for “making” any number of candidates from JD Vance in Ohio to Ron DeSantis in Florida. And he regularly brags about the candidates he has endorsed who have won the primaries.
So you can imagine what Trump would do with a red wave – or something close to it – sweeping across the country on November 8. He will present himself as the reason behind the Republican victories and try to use that as a springboard for launching a campaign of his own.
And the fact is, there will be no one within the GOP willing to step up and question Trump’s credit claims because he is the loudest voice in the room and the most popular person at the party.
The point is: a victory for the Republicans would result in Trump’s political benefit – the question is whether or not he should take as much credit for it as he undoubtedly will.
