Negotiations have proven significantly more effective than military operations in freeing Israeli hostages held in Gaza, according to an assessment by the International analyst at CNN Lourival Sant’Anna.
During your participation in the program CNN Prime Time Sant’Anna presented compelling data that corroborate this statement.
According to the analyst, of the 250 hostages captured by Hamas on October 7, 108 were released in November through negotiations involving prisoner exchange and a temporary ceasefire.
In contrast, only eight hostages were rescued alive by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in military operations.
Challenges of rescue operations
Sant’Anna highlighted the difficulty of carrying out successful rescue operations, especially in tunnel areas.
The recent rescue of Kaid Farhan Al-Qadi, a Bedouin with Israeli citizenship, was described as a discovery during a sweeping operation rather than a planned rescue.
The analyst also highlighted that, according to Israeli estimates, 36 hostages have probably already died, while 105 may still be alive and awaiting release.
These numbers reinforce the urgency of finding effective solutions to the crisis.
Prospects for future negotiations
Sant’Anna mentioned that negotiations are scheduled to take place in Doha, Qatar, with the unprecedented participation of representatives from the IDF, Mossad (external secret service) and Shin Bet (internal secret service).
This composition may signal a greater commitment by the Israeli government to advance negotiations.
However, the analyst pointed to significant obstacles, such as resistance from members of Netanyahu’s cabinet to any negotiations with Hamas.
In addition, there are points of disagreement over the Israeli military presence in the Philadelphia corridor, which links Gaza to Egypt, and over Israel’s power to veto the release of certain Palestinian prisoners.
Sant’Anna concluded that the biggest challenge to advancing negotiations is the position of Prime Minister Netanyahu himself, who finds himself politically limited by hardline ministers in his cabinet, whose departure could destabilize his government.
