International analyst Lourival Sant’Anna harshly criticized the suggestion of a “second round” in the Venezuelan elections, proposed by the international affairs advisor at the Planalto Palace, Celso Amorim. According to Sant’Anna, the idea “serves to cover up fraud” in the country’s electoral process.
During your participation in the program CNN Prime Time the expert detailed the political scenario in Venezuela, painting a worrying picture of Nicolás Maduro’s regime.
Sant’Anna explained that the country is in the process of consolidating a dictatorship, having already surpassed the stage of autocracy.
The stages of authoritarianism
The analyst highlighted that, in political science, authoritarianism is understood in three stages: autocracy, dictatorship and totalitarianism.
“The Bolivarian regime is perfecting the dictatorship,” said Sant’Anna, highlighting that Venezuela has already overcome the phase of autocracy, where there was still an appearance of democracy with the holding of elections, although without real alternation of power.
According to the expert, Maduro’s regime has reached a point where it “no longer has the concern to disguise, or is unable to disguise” its authoritarian character.
Sant’Anna argued that the government’s unpopularity is so great that any attempt to create a democratic appearance could be risky for maintaining power.
Lourival Sant’Anna’s analysis sheds light on the complexity of the political situation in Venezuela and questions the effectiveness of proposals such as Celso Amorim’s.
The expert suggests that such initiatives may actually contribute to legitimizing a fundamentally compromised electoral process, rather than promoting true democratization in the country.
