The recent telephone conversation between the Prime Minister of Germany, Olaf Scholz, and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, caused discomfort in Ukraine, as assessed by international analyst Fernanda Magnotta during the CNN 360° this Monday (18).
According to Magnotta, the Ukrainians interpreted Scholz’s initiative as an attempt to legitimize the Russian army’s actions in Ukraine, rather than a genuine attempt at aid.
The call, which took place after months of diplomatic distance between European leaders and Putin, broke a communication barrier that had been established.
Meanwhile, other European leaders maintain a firmer stance. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in a speech at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, promised to double aid to Ukraine and classified the conflict as “Russia’s illegal war”.
Perspectives on conflict escalation
Despite concerns about a possible escalation of the conflict, especially after the announcement of new missiles, Ukrainian military sources consulted by Magnotta are skeptical about this possibility.
A senior Ukrainian military officer categorically stated that he did not believe in an escalation, even ruling out the risk of a nuclear attack.
The military man argued that the political costs for Russia of carrying out a nuclear attack would be extremely high, and that such an action would result in the loss of Chinese support, a crucial ally for Moscow in the current international scenario.
