It’s not hard to understand why Republicans are obsessed with the possibility of Michelle Obama running for president of the United States one day.
The former first lady has become one of the most powerful political figures in the United States — despite and because of her aversion to politics.
The Obamas’ every word and gesture in the White House has been subject to relentless scrutiny, given their barrier-breaking status as the first black presidential family.
But those restrictions have long since fallen away, and Michelle Obama delivered her most personal and searing critique yet of Donald Trump on Tuesday night at the Democratic Convention.
She recalled with emotion the impact of the “birtherism” campaign that launched Trump’s political rise — and which, according to her, was a preview of how the Republican candidate will mount a racist campaign to portray Kamala Harris as someone who is not authentically American.
“For years, Donald Trump has done everything in his power to try to make people fear us,” she said.
“His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who happened to be black,” she said.
Obama’s support for Kamala was equally steadfast, as a proud icon of black womanhood extolled a Democratic candidate whom Trump has vilified as not really being black.
Meanwhile, Democratic operatives will be happy with the former first lady’s stern warning against voter complacency and her admonishment to anyone fearful of the prospect of a second Trump term to “do something.”
Even former President Barack Obama joked, “I’m the only person stupid enough to talk after Michelle Obama.”
