Italy has taken a controversial step in managing the migration crisis by sending the first group of immigrants to Albania aboard a navy ship.
This measure reflects a growing trend in Europe to seek alternative solutions to deal with the flow of immigrants.
According to international analyst Lourival Sant’Anna, the tendency is for similar measures, to send immigrants to other countries, to spread across the European continent.
Sant’Anna highlights that even center-left governments, such as that of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, are seeking to implement policies to redistribute immigrants and ease pressure on Mediterranean countries.
Political pressure and the rise of the far right
The analyst describes Europe as a “political pressure cooker”, where the issue of immigration has driven the growth of far-right parties in several countries, such as Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.
Sant’Anna warns that it is necessary to find solutions that reduce the “fuel” given to extremist groups, which are elected thanks to the immigration agenda, but which can advance other agendas considered anti-European.
The Italian project, praised by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, involves the construction of two detention centers in Albanian cities.
The initiative aims to process asylum requests outside Italian territory, focusing on adult men who are not considered vulnerable and come from countries without a history of strong persecution or violence, such as Egypt and Bangladesh.
This strategy seeks to deter economic immigrants, who make up the majority of those arriving in southern Europe. By processing applications in a country less attractive to immigrants, Italy hopes to reduce the appeal of dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossings in rickety vessels.
The Italian measure follows a trend observed in other European countries. The United Kingdom, for example, tried to implement a similar plan to send immigrants to Rwanda, but was blocked by the British High Court.
However, interest in such solutions remains, with the British Prime Minister expressing curiosity about the Italian model during a recent visit to Italy.
As Europe continues to face migration challenges, we are likely to see more countries adopting similar approaches, seeking to balance domestic political pressures with international humanitarian obligations.
