Analysis: Trump increases Republican margins in Texas and gains ground in New York

Texas has voted Republican in the presidential race since 1980. After the election of Ronald Reagan, the state began to be considered as “guaranteed” for the party, according to an analysis carried out with data from the CNN and the specialized website 270ToWin.

In the last two elections, however, the margin between Republicans and Democrats was narrowing. This fueled the Democrats’ dream of making Texas a “blue state” — those who vote overwhelmingly for Joe Biden.

But this Wednesday’s result (6) may have dispelled that desire. With the 2024 election race, Donald Trump’s party grew again in the state. The president-elect won 56.2% of the votes with 99% of the ballots counted.

This was Trump’s best result in the state, as in the 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Republicans failed to exceed 52.2%.

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, on the other hand, had 42.4% of the vote: the worst result for the party since 2012.

And the reasons for concern for Democrats don’t stop there. Although Kamala won New York’s delegates with 55.4% of the vote – with 94% of the ballots counted -, this was the party’s weakest performance in the state since 1992, and Trump won important margins there, counting on the best performance since 1988.

He even improved results in the counties of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The places are traditionally Democratic and do not usually count on positive numbers for Republicans.
