The international affairs analyst at CNN Lourival Sant’Anna assessed that UN forces are not proving effective in the Middle East conflict. He highlighted the complexity of the situation in the region, especially with regard to the actions of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil).
According to the expert, Unifil was established after the first Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1978 and had the objective of monitoring the so-called “blue line” and preventing mutual attacks between Lebanese and Israeli forces.
However, the scenario changed drastically with the emergence of Hezbollah in the 1980s.
Unifil’s ineffectiveness
Lourival explained that Unifil “does not have the military conditions to impose the mandate” established in 2006, which aims to prevent Hezbollah from occupying the southern region of Lebanon.
“If they had managed to prevent Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel, Israel would not need to invade Lebanon,” said the analyst.
The expert also highlighted that Israel has historically ignored international law and the authority of the UN. He cited resolutions demanding Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied in the Six-Day War, which were never fulfilled.
Attacks on UN facilities
Lourival mentioned recent Israeli attacks on UN facilities in Gaza, including the agency’s hospitals and camps for Palestinian refugees.
According to him, Israel justified these actions by claiming that 12 of the agency’s 14,000 employees had participated in the Hamas attack, which led to the deauthorization of the entire organization.
The analyst concluded by highlighting the importance of the work carried out by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip, despite Israeli accusations.
The situation remains tense, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promising to continue acting “without mercy”, ignoring calls from international organizations.
