President Donald Trump’s recent decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement for the second time creates a significant challenge for COP 30, the United Nations conference on climate change that will be hosted by Brazil in Belém, in November this year.
According to CNN Climate and Environment analyst Pedro Côrtes, the US withdrawal from the global climate agreement imposes an additional obstacle for Itamaraty and Brazilian diplomacy.
“It is a greater challenge for the Brazilian Foreign Ministry to achieve significant participation from heads of states to, let’s put it this way, cancel out Trump’s absence from the climate convention,” said the analyst.
Impacts of Trump’s decision
The expert highlighted that the argument used by Trump to justify leaving the agreement is contradictory.
“The argument he used is quite interesting in that he says, look, China is a big polluter and this pollution, these emissions, are not restricted to China”, explained Côrtes.
However, the analyst emphasized that it is precisely for this reason that the Paris Agreement exists: for all countries to voluntarily indicate their emission reduction targets.
Challenges for COP 30
With the confirmed absence of the United States at COP 30, Côrtes points out that Brazil will face an even greater challenge to guarantee the presence of world leaders at the event.
“There is a doubt about whether China will be represented, whether Xi Jinping would come to Brazil. I even believe that this could even happen as a counterpoint to Trump’s absence, but this will depend on an even greater effort from the Brazilian government and Itamaraty”, he pondered.
The expert also commented on Trump’s environmental policies, which include encouraging the production of fossil fuels and reducing support for the renewable energy industry.
“Trump has already made this very clear in the campaign, there is no issue of climate change, this is fake news for him”, warned Côrtes, highlighting the former American president’s stance on climate change.
