The political scenario in Venezuela has become even more tense after the request for the arrest of opposition leader María Corina Machado and presidential candidate Edmundo González, made by the president of the Legislative Assembly. The international analyst of CNN Fernanda Magnotta assesses the situation as extremely worrying.
According to Magnotta, Venezuela is making great strides towards replicating Daniel Ortega’s Nicaraguan model. “In addition to the democratic deficit that already existed before this election, there is now also an even more intense mix of three ingredients that already occurred in Nicaragua and that now seem to be gaining momentum in Venezuela,” explains the analyst.
Three worrying elements
The first element highlighted by Magnotta is the violent way in which protests have been dealt with, which in Nicaragua has resulted in deaths and disappearances. The second point is the allegations of corruption and the appropriation of public funds for partisan interests. Finally, the formation of controversial alliances due to growing international isolation.
“Venezuela was already isolated, this is nothing new to anyone, but there was a prospect of an open channel, of a possibility of even regional rescue of these cooperation structures. That is now going down the drain,” says Magnotta.
The analyst predicts that Venezuela will enter a collision course with the main actors in the West, especially the United States and Europe, which have already expressed concern about the situation. As a result, the country could be pushed into a closer relationship with China and Russia.
Alarming consequences
When comparing the situation with the Nicaraguan experience, Magnotta warns of the possible consequences: “The result is devastating. We have seen politics become increasingly contaminated and the crisis more pronounced from an institutional point of view. We have seen the worsening, the complete degradation of the economy of that country and from the point of view of human rights, the absolute and resounding disrespect.”
The analyst concludes that, although there is no surprising news, the situation in Venezuela is worsening and intensifying, pushing the country into a place of even greater excesses than previously observed.
