Anastasiadis: If Turkey acts illegally, it will be the tombstone for a solution to the Cyprus problem

Mr. Anastasiadis added that President Biden expressed in his letter, There are serious concerns about Turkey’s decision to open part of Varos.

Referring to the Turkish President’s illegal visit to the occupied territories on July 20 and the threats he unleashed, President Anastasiadis called on the heads of diplomatic missions present at the event to convey to their Governments the need to persuade the Turkish President to abstain. will provoke new illegal actions, especially in Famagusta.

“If Turkey takes such illegal action, especially in relation to the besieged city of Famagusta, this will be the tombstone, not only of the resumption of the negotiation process, but more importantly, of the achievement of a viable and functional solution“, Said the President.

He added that in order to de-escalate tensions, he has submitted proposals for Confidence-Building Measures that could address the concerns of both sides and all issues concerning Varosi. He said, however, that the Turkish positions set in Geneva did not allow the process to move forward.

Finally, the President of the Republic reiterated his strong commitment to engage in a new creative and meaningful dialogue, with full respect for the parameters of the United Nations, provided that all parties refrain from any illegal action.
