Anastasiadis: No one is preventing Turkey from playing a role in Mediterranean energy issues

Nobody is stopping her Turkey to have a say and a role in the energy issues of the Mediterranean, provided and of course that it concludes with the Republic of Cyprus the dividing lines of the EEZ of each of the two countries, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.

Speaking to reporters after the handover ceremony to the investor, the marina and the port of Larnaca, and when asked if during his meeting with US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland yesterday, he conveyed a message from Ankara, where Ms. Nuland was before going to Cyprusand when asked to comment on her reports in interviews suggesting an energy union with the occupied territories before reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem, the President said “no, what he conveyed is not the upgrading of the occupied territories, is the need for Turkish energy of the Mediterranean.

“And of course the answer was clear that no one is preventing Turkey from having a say and a role if and when it certainly agrees with the Republic of Cyprus on the dividing lines of the EEZ of each of the two countries.”

Asked about EastMed and what US officials are saying“What we are waiting for is the final report, which is funded by the EU. then it will take place. It’s not a matter for the US government to decide on a European project.

“What everyone is seeing – and it is very important – is the need for the EU to become independent of specific markets and alternative gas supply routes to Europe, and the nearest one is the Eastern Mediterranean basin.”

Asked if it would take some time for the study to be completed, the President of the Republic answered in the affirmative, according to the Athens News Agency.
