“Anatomy of a Fall”: director reveals that monologue was a response to another film

Justine Triet director of the Oscar-nominated “Anatomy of a Fall” revealed that the monologue by Sandra Hüller's character during the couple's fight — hailed as the film's highlight by fans — was inspired by Adam Driver's monologue in “Marriage Story” .

“I was inspired by 'Marriage Story', by Noah Baumbach, especially the fight scene between Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. I love the film, I think her role is much more fragile than his. The argument scene in 'Anatomy of a Fall' almost dialogues with this scene. I thought, 'I'm going to give this woman some things to answer,'” Triet said in an interview with Picture House.

In the scene in question in the film, writer Sandra (Sandra Hüller) is arguing with her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and confronts him, saying that he cannot put himself in the role of victim.

The argument between Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and Charlie (Adam Driver) in “Marriage Story” has a similar structure, but it is the man who is the protagonist of the moment, while the woman listens without saying much.

“Anatomy of a Fall” It won the Palme d'Or and received five Oscar nominations, including Best Film.

In the plot,A woman is suspected of murdering her husband and her blind son faces a moral dilemma as the only witness.

The title is written by Justine Triet (“Sibyl” and “In Bed with Victoria”) and stars Sandra Hüller — who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance — Swann Arlaud and Milo Machado Graner.
