And Georgia is asking for Europe’s support

Another diplomatic front opens for Putin: The Georgian president is visiting Paris asking for support for Ukraine and its country.

Georgia’s 2018 President Salome Zurabishvili arrived in Paris today, the crucial day for the negotiations on the Ukrainian crisis. In the afternoon, he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is also President of the European Council this semester. According to her morning statements on French radio, the first message she wants to address to the French president is: “Keep Europe strong”. The second concerns the “relations of the European Union with the three associated countries, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova”. It is an important chapter, in the president’s view, that “should not be sidelined”.

The awakening of Europe

Ms. Zurabishvili estimates that “European countries are ready for a further symbolic and political move” towards these three countries. “I do not have the illusion of full membership, but we are the most advanced on the European path, and the member states must now think about the form that this extra step could take,” he said.

According to the President, Vladimir Putin was surprised by the reaction of the Europeans, he did not expect it and did not predict it correctly, because it is the first time that the Europeans react quickly and effectively, in contrast to the inaction they showed during the Georgian crisis, recalling the Russian “Five Day War” in Georgia in 2008.

“Now we have to keep going. It would be wrong to focus all our attention on Ukraine, giving the impression that the other two countries are less important,” she said.
