The days of Andrea Gherpelli they start every morning at half past six in his country estate in Prato di Correggio, in the province of Reggio Emilia. When we talk on the phone, he is cleaning the threshed wheat in July: from there he will ventilate it, calibrate it, choose the large-bodied grains and pass them to the mill to obtain flour. Together with his partner Elena, he will then take care of the bagging, portioning the product and then sending it to the markets, to shipments and to the customers of the shop. Part of this world linked to the earth and its perfumes, to the effort that enriches the heart and helps to rediscover the purest bond with nature, we will savor it in Wild Teens – Budding Peasants, the new docu-reality produced by Banijay Italia available November 3 on Discovery +.
The protagonists are twelve teenagers accustomed to the comforts and luxuries of the city which, in the bucolic setting of Cascine Orsine, will dedicate themselves, together with Gherpelli, to the discovery of works in closer contact with the earth, rediscovering the rules of a world, that of the countryside, which needs constantly caring to grow and sprout. Between waking up at dawn, cow mounts and farm management, the goal of the program is to ensure that the children are able to grow and take responsibility running a farm independently. Gherpelli, who in addition to playing the role of the farmer, is also an actor in life – we have seen him, among others, in I wanted to hide by Giorgio Rights and in fiction Hearts by Riccardo Donna -, is the Virgil of these young budding farmers, a reassuring and passionate presence who has dedicated and continues to dedicate all his life to the countryside.
What an experience that was Wild Teens?
“Supernatural. It was an opportunity to meet people who have not had the privilege of growing up in contact with the earth to lead them to discover a bond that starts from the hands and reaches the heart. Those born and raised in the city have a lack of contact with nature: this is why Wild Teens it was a sensational opportunity ».
How did you find these lazy guys?
«Quite confused. The time jump for them was epochal. We tried to make him understand that the earth cannot be a spare time or a hobby, but take the time to take care of something ».
In this regard, it seems to me that you have taken great care of these guys.
«I can’t ignore listening to the person I meet, as well as with the ancient seeds that I recover from different parts of the world, with animals: it’s the same concept. We live in a world where it seems that fatigue is something to be avoided, something that has terrible consequences on the person, but it is not. Only effort can make a seed, an idea, a project germinate. For them, at that age, it is necessary to find a balance and understand how to relate not so much to me, but to themselves “.
Did you have a balance at their age?
“Being born in the country saved me. I have always been a person who needed to discover, understand, move and ask in order to invent things for myself. Being born here has allowed me to have stimuli that, probably, I would have dreamed if I had been born in the city ».
