Android apps will be able to use their payment systems. Already being tested on Spotify

Internet giant Google appears to be more flexible than Apple in giving its users the choice of how to pay for mobile apps. The fact that Google is already testing a new Google Play payment model was revealed in a blog post by Sameer Samat, vice president of product management at the company.

A Google executive announced the launch of a pilot project in which the company will allow developers participating in testing to offer users their own payment method in their applications in addition to the proprietary Google Play payment system. According to Samir Samat, the pilot project will allow the company to better understand all the nuances of choosing from several payment systems for users in different countries and for developers of applications of different sizes and different categories. And Google spokesman Dan Jackson added that the company now has a goal to enable users in key markets to choose the payment method in the applications of developers participating in the testing of the new scheme this year.

One of the first to test the new payment model was the popular music streaming service Spotify. Representatives of the company have already told how this system will work. Users who download Spotify from Google Play will be asked to choose to pay either with Spotify’s own payment system or with Google, they said. As a result, each Spotify customer will have the opportunity to use a convenient payment method directly in the application. In the coming months, the music service, together with the Google development team, will work on the implementation of the new system so that users around the world will have access to it by the end of 2022.
