Android creator Andy Rubin sold his startup Essential to a new company Nothing Technologies Limited, which was formed by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.
This means that all of Essential’s existing trademarks, logo, and brand are now the intellectual property of Nothing, a startup that was recently backed by Google parent Alphabet, although it’s unclear how this affects any patents Essential currently owns. So far, there is no confirmation that Nothing is entering the smartphone market, but the prerequisites for this now exist.
Recall that in 2017, the Essential Phone smartphone was released, which was one of the first to receive a teardrop notch for the front camera, which later became a very popular solution among many manufacturers.
In 2019, Essential showed a strange smartphone with a 36: 9 aspect ratio. In terms of dimensions, the smartphone was more like a remote control with a touch screen instead of physical buttons.
Essential has worked on its own smart home hub and speaker. It was originally planned to release new items at the end of 2017, but they never entered the market. Nothing has promised to launch its “first smart devices in the first half of this year.”
Nothing is set to reveal more information on upcoming products in the coming days via the official website.
