Android location will be sent to police, firefighters and SUS during call

THE Google launched, on Monday (16), the Emergency Location Service (ELS ) in Brazil. The mechanism will allow automatic sharing of the location who makes a call or sends an SMS to emergency services — such as the military police, the fire department or SAMU — with the local authorities .

Made in partnership with the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), ELS is now available free of charge for cell phones with Android 5.0 or newer versions of the operating system — which is equivalent to 99% of devices of its kind. Furthermore, Google does not have access to information sent to authorities, which maintains user privacy.

The idea is to join forces and bring together the mobile network, Wi-Fi, GPS and sensor data to provide more accurate information about where the person who made the emergency call is. In some cases, contextual information will also be added. This way, rescuers can act with greater accuracy and more quickly, which increases the number of lives saved.

“The partnership with Anatel is a milestone in the use of technology for the security and well-being of the Brazilian population. Something simple, like precise location information, shared quickly with authorities generates efficiency, reduces the response time of a rescue team and can mean the difference between someone’s life and death”, says Bruno Diniz, leader of Android engineering in Brazil.
