Anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra performed 90 cesarean surgeries in four units of the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro, from May 2021 to July 2022.
The information is from a letter from the State Department of Health (SES) of Rio de Janeiro, issued through the Undersecretary of Health Care, sent in response to a question from the Rio de Janeiro Public Defender’s Office about the case.
Most of the surgeries of this type performed by the anesthesiologist did not take place at the Heloneida Studart State Hospital, in São João de Meriti, where the doctor was filmed and caught by the team raping a parturient during childbirth, in the episode that led to his arrest. In this unit, he performed 29 deliveries of this type.
Most of the procedures took place at the Hospital Estadual da Mãe, in Mesquita, a neighboring city, also in Baixada Fluminense: 37.
In the same region, in Duque de Caxias, he performed nine cesarean sections at the Adão Pereira Nunes Municipal Hospital, state-owned and currently managed by the Duque de Caxias City Hall. The other 15 took place at the Azevedo Lima State Hospital, in Niterói, Metropolitan Region.
On the 19th, the doctor was indicted by the Civil Police for rape of a vulnerable person, in a case conducted by the Women’s Police Station of São João de Meriti.
The decision follows the understanding of the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MP-RJ), which denounced the doctor in the same framework. The fact, judicially, makes him a defendant.
Giovanni Quintella Bezerra is 32 years old and was arrested on July 11 in the act. The anesthesiologist’s behavior, with excessive use of anesthetics and with the formation of a hut next to the patient’s head, which prevented other professionals from being able to observe her performance during delivery.
For this reason, after unsuccessful attempts to film it, the average team chose to change the operating room to perform a new procedure of this type. In the new space, it was easier to film it and confirm the act.
The recorded images, which the CNN chose not to exhibit, show the moment that Geovanni Quintella Bezerra passes his penis in the patient’s face, when she is sedated and lying on a stretcher.
Then, he introduces the genitalia into the victim’s mouth and, when he is finished, cleans the traces with a gauze. The entire crime process takes about ten minutes.
Before the surgery, the doctor asked the child’s father, the victim’s husband, to leave the delivery room, which experts consider to be a violation of the companion law. The legislation allows the parturient to be accompanied before, during and after the procedure by a person of her trust and choice.
The doctor has been in jail since July 11. The following day, the arrest in flagrante delicto was converted into preventive arrest, during a custody hearing. Every year, the doctor is in the Bangu 8 prison, in the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
THE CNN tries to locate Geovanni Quintella Bezerra’s defense. At first, the office of lawyer Hugo Novais took over the case, but informed that it would not comment on the situation until it had full access to the case file. However, on the same day, he later released a note, in which he said he had left the process.
The doctor was suspended by the Regional Council of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj), which opened an ethical-disciplinary process against the anesthesiologist. The SES reported, at the time, to have opened an investigation and notified Cremerj, and that the direction of the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart provides full support to the victim and family members.
Asked about possible new investigation procedures in other units, after the announcement with the number of patients who underwent cesarean sections with the anesthesiologist, the SES has not yet expressed itself.
