Anesthetist accused of raping woman during childbirth has professional registration revoked

The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) announced this Tuesday (28) that it decided to permanently revoke the professional registration of anesthetist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra. He was arrested in July last year and is accused of having raped a woman during her childbirth at a hospital in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense.

According to Cremerj, “the definitive revocation of the registration is the highest penalty, according to current legislation”. “As a result, Giovanni Quintella Bezerra is completely barred from practicing medicine in Brazil.”

A CNN tries to contact the anesthesiologist’s defense, but has not received a response until the publication of this report.

Bezerra was arrested red-handed at the Heloneida Studart Women’s State Hospital after co-workers called the police against him.

Suspicious of the anesthesiologist’s conduct, other professionals hid a cell phone with the camera on during a delivery. The device recorded the moment when Bezerra passed his penis on the patient’s face while she was unconscious and lying on the stretcher. The images also show that the organ was introduced into the parturient’s mouth, while the team worked on the surgery.

He responds for rape of vulnerable in the 2nd Criminal Court of São João de Meriti. The complaint made by the Public Ministry highlights that the crime was committed against a pregnant woman and in violation of the duty inherent to the profession. The case is under judicial secrecy to preserve the identity of the victim.

Since the case came to light, the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro has heard from other women who were anesthetized by Bezerra. The goal is to try to identify other possible victims.
