A close associate of hers Angela Merkel collapsed next to her husband during their return from Cuba to Frankfurt on Sunday, the Daily Mail.
The plane made an emergency landing in Ireland, with 53-year-old Karin Strange being rushed to hospital, where it became known that she was now dead.
The cause of her death is now expected to be clarified by the necropsy at the Limerick hospital, while the reason for her trip to Cuba remains unknown.
It is noted that – together with two other deputies – Strange was investigated by the German authorities for dealing with the government of Azerbaijan.
More specifically, the group of three CDU deputies allegedly received money from the authoritarian Azeri regime, in exchange for the relevant lobbying.
The 53-year-old MP also voted against a resolution in the Council of Europe on the release of political prisoners by the government of the former Soviet state.
In case of guilt, Merkel’s close associate risked 5 years in prison.
