Angelica Giusto: “Never be in a hurry”

Ad Angelica Giusto his city, Savona, has always been a bit tight. “As a girl I realized pretty early on that I wanted to make films. As a child it was as if the city went against my dream ”explains Giusto who, beyond the support that her family has always given her, has often felt“ an alien who couldn’t wait to escape ”. At 19 she went to live alone, she chose to attend university to take the time to understand if her desire to become an actress was only a passing interest, and then she decided to move to Rome, where she still does today. lives, to try seriously.

After appearing in fiction like The alligator and in short films such as Tape, the cinema has opened its doors thanks to Even more beautiful, Claudio Norza’s film, sequel to On the most beautiful, which will be followed, in February 2022, by a third chapter. In the film she plays Cristina, a girl who will find herself living in a particularly male-dominated environment who will teach her that teaming up is the best way to settle those who think they are exploiting their position for their own gain.

Has male chauvinism ever suffered in your work?
“Maybe yes, but I wasn’t fully aware of it. It is important to emphasize this aspect, because in the past it is possible that you have turned a blind eye to many things, believing that everything was normal ».

When did you begin to understand that this world interested you?
“When I was 15, a friend of my mother who works in fashion, a bit for fun, took pictures of me and, from there, I participated in several campaigns during my adolescence. I didn’t go out with my friends and I gave up walking downtown to work: at a certain point the agency, realizing that I wanted to act, assigned me a coach: it all started from there ».

Did you experience the fact of not being able to live a normal adolescence as a renunciation?
“A bit’. At one point I experienced a moment of crisis and I had to stop to see if it was really what I wanted to do: towards the end of high school, instead of enrolling immediately at the academy, I wanted to do the DAMS in Genoa with a specialization in Cinema for understand if mine was a passion, a hobby or what I wanted to do in life. I got there when I was 23 ».

What happened at 23?
«I realized that I was curious to know what was going on behind the camera, but I couldn’t stay on the bench: I wanted to be an active part of the story that was going to be told. The right choice, at that point, was to put myself on the line to the end ».

Have you ever thought of going down this path as a child?
«Thanks to my father, who is a great enthusiast, I immediately became passionate about the way stories were told and represented: I have always experienced all this as a consequence of what I enjoyed. If we are destined for something, that something will sooner or later come to us and, in this, the debut in the cinema was a confirmation ».

More scared or more thrilled at the idea of the debut?
“More scared, but always in a good way. The unknown is also beautiful, and it is part of this work. I have never been in a hurry and the presumption to say and do everything. The first few times I got angry if I failed an audition, but now I’m starting to understand that if something is right it will come: the key to this job, after all, is to work on yourself and improve yourself ».

What dreams do you have?
“I’m just getting started, but I’d love to meet a character who would help me discover a new version of myself.”

Do you have anyone in mind?
«Marco Bellocchio. I have dreamed of working on it since I was a student. It would be a bit like the closing of a circle since, when I moved to Rome at the age of 23, I attended the school of Gisella Burinato who, in addition to being married to Bellocchio, starred in many of her films ».

His greatest talent?
«Curiosity and generosity. To do this job, you need to try to stay as little as possible on yourself and give the character 100% ».
