Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter drops her father’s surname

The daughter of Angelina Jolie 49, and Brad Pitt 60, Shiloh officially removed her father’s surname after experiencing “painful events.” The teenager requested the name change on her 18th birthday, May 27, as published in the Los Angeles Times through a public announcement – similar to the Official Gazette -, following legal requirements.

In a new statement, Shiloh’s attorney Peter Levine said it was a “significant decision” and urged caution in media coverage, explaining that she never made a public “announcement” about the change but simply followed the necessary legal process.

“The media should be more careful in reporting this story, especially when it involves a young adult who made an independent and important decision after painful events, and is simply following the legal process,” the legal representative said.

“Shiloh Jolie did not make an ‘announcement’ about her name change, and any report that claims that she did is wrong. As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because California law requires it of anyone who wants to change their name. That notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as required,” he continued.

These comments are similar to those made by California family law officer David Glass, who told People magazine that the public announcement of the name change in a newspaper “could not have been avoided” so that Shiloh’s official name change process could proceed.

“She needs to file a formal petition with the court to change her name and she needs to publish an advertisement four weeks before the hearing is scheduled, as well as notify both parents in writing. These name change petitions usually go smoothly and are granted unless the person has a criminal record and is trying to escape punishment or responsibility… I have never seen a petition challenged in court,” he added.

“Brad could go to court and claim, for example, that Shiloh was alienated from him by her mother. But since she’s not a minor, she can essentially choose whatever name she wants,” he explained.

Angelina, 49, and Brad, 60, split in 2016 and share children Shiloh, Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, and 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

A source told People that “Fight Club” actor Brad, who is dating businesswoman Ines de Ramon, 31, now has “virtually no contact with his adult children.” Another source told the magazine, “He still loves all of his kids immensely.”
