Angelina Jolie breaks down in tears during screening of “Maria” at Venice Film Festival

Angelina Jolie had an emotional experience at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday (29). The Oscar winner attended the premiere of her upcoming film “Maria” at the event and was greeted by such thunderous — and reportedly long — applause after the screening that she appeared visibly moved.

Jolie was escorted down the stairs at the theater amidst a standing ovation and was seen wiping tears from her face, video footage shows. The film’s director Pablo Larrain along with cast members such as Alba Rohrwacher and Pierfrancesco Favino were also in the room.

“Maria” is a biographical film starring Jolie as Maria Callas, one of the world’s greatest opera singers. Set in 1970s Paris, the film tells the story of Callas’s tragic and tumultuous life and chronicles her final days.

The film has already generated Oscar buzz after its Venice premiere. Larraín previously directed “Jackie” 2016, starring Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and “Spencer” of 2021, with Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana. Both actresses received Oscar nominations for their performances.

Speaking at a press conference for the new film, Jolie said she was able to relate to Callas in surprising ways, according to People. Among them, she said, was “the part of her that is extremely soft and has no room in the world to be as soft as she really was, and as emotionally open as she really was.”

“I share your vulnerability more than anything,” the actress added.

On Wednesday (28), Netflix announced that “Maria” will be shown on the streaming service on a date to be announced.
