The actress Angelina Jolie 49, admitted she was “immediately intimidated” when asked to play the late opera singer Maria Callas in “Maria Callas “. The star explained that she knew little about the artist before diving into research for the role in the biographical film directed by Pablo Larraín 48.
“I was immediately intimidated by the idea, because now that I know more about her, I realized that I actually didn’t know her. I only knew her music and only what many of us knew about her, or the power of her art,” began Jolie in an interview with Best magazine.
The Oscar winner declared that she threw herself headlong into Callas’ life, and quickly created a connection with her.
“But I heard your music; you study when you play a real person, you take it very seriously. You will have this privilege of breathing into that life and aligning yourself with its essence. I need to love someone to play them properly ; I need to feel like I can do it. It was easy to fall in love with her and be moved by his music, but it was very difficult to believe that I could do that”, he reported.
Angelina placed her trust in filmmaker Pablo Larraín and his ability to extract intense interpretations from the actors he works with.
“Pablo is a very, very strong director who would make sure I had the right training and he would push me. I was willing to jump in if he believed I could do it, but I was terrified.”
The actress has been touted as a possible Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category, but said she was already “genuinely very happy” just to have made the film.
“It means a lot that someone thinks you did a good job. Right? This means everything to me. That kind of stuff is exciting and really, really cool. But I’m very happy that we managed to make this film. I am genuinely very happy. I know it sounds like a cliché that people say, but truly, this was a once in a lifetime experience. I learned to sing and embodied a woman I respect. I was able to work with this extraordinary team of people. I feel like I’ve already received the greatest gift. Audiences seem to have responded well to the film. So anything else is a dream, but I’m already so grateful.”
Before “Maria Callas”, Angelina Jolie had never sung in public.
“Maria Callas” is scheduled to hit Brazilian cinemas in January 16th .
