Angelina Jolie on the side of the Yazidis in Iraq

THE Angelina Jolie along with human rights activist Nadia Mourad visited the Sinjar region of northern Iraq and spoke with survivors of the 2014 genocide by the Islamic State (ISIS), according to People.

“I am honored to be returning to Iraq, this time to support the work of my friend Nadia Mourad and other local Yazidis who are rebuilding their lives and communities after the horrors they experienced,” Jolie said through Nadia’s Initiative.

“I have seen the progress they have made, but also the need for long-term international engagement in support of their work and leadership. Yazidi survivors continue to struggle with trauma, insecurity, displacement and slow progress on reparations. I met families who are still searching for answers about their missing loved ones and others who still don’t have support to meet their basic needs. The locals here work to support themselves. They deserve respect and support,” he continued, as reported by APE-MPE.

In a statement, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Irene Mourad called Jolie’s work “definitive in raising awareness and meeting the needs of women, children and refugees around the world.”
