Angelo Spagnoletti: “The exercise of humility”

According to Angelo Spagnoletti the secret to living away from home in Rome is to never feel Roman: “I have lived in this city for eight years, now I have a relationship of love and hate for Rome” he reveals on the phone from Benevento, where he is renovating a house in the countryside that he already knows that it will become his place in the heart, a way to regenerate and rediscover his roots. From the small town of San Giorgio la Molara he left immediately after high school to pursue a dream, that of acting, which he has cultivated since he was 12 years old: a dream that led him to gain experience in the theater and conquer large audience thanks to 56k generation, the Cattleya series created in collaboration with The Jackal and available on Netflix which saw him in the role of Daniel, a boy who seeks the love and carefree nature of a blissful childhood.

The passion for acting overwhelmed her when she was very young: when did you realize you wanted to chase her?
“Since I attended the show in junior high I don’t pay you by De Filippo and I felt that something had taken place that I wanted to investigate, cultivate and deepen. I experienced high school as a perennial withdrawal crisis: coming from a small village, I felt that to be on stage I would have to leave ».

How was the passage from the country to Rome?
«Destabilizing, moving from a town of 3 thousand inhabitants to the city was not easy. When I entered the Experimental Center I realized how beautiful this work is and how much I wanted to do it. It is hard work, almost gypsy and circus because he is one of the few who immediately declares himself precarious. This requires an exercise of constant humility, to understand that we must start again and always give our best ».

Did you acquire this awareness immediately?
«I have always perceived the social and universal value of this work. Looking at Gian Maria Volonté’s work, I began to understand that this profession also has a profound ethical, social and human value that goes beyond appearances and the reductions of stories. Today it is greatly reduced, linked to a condition of fame and success, but in reality it is something that travels in parallel with the soul ».

What generation do you feel you belong to?
“To the last one who felt the change.”

Are you longing for something?
“Of everything. I especially miss the condition of not necessarily being reached by something. Before, the wait was experienced as a physiological path, today it is no longer the case. We are becoming more passive because everything has become more comfortable and obvious, a slave to immediacy ».

Going back to those times, what did you want to become as a child?
“I was constantly changing, and this led me to the idea of ​​being an actor. I wanted to be an architect to design the house of my dreams, but also a bricklayer to be able to build it, then a cook and, at a certain point, a Pixar designer. Then the theater arrived and it upset everything ».

For the future, is it better to have a plan or to navigate on sight?
«You need to have a route, but also to sail calmly without too many expectations, preparing for any island you may encounter. If I think about the future, I would certainly like to do auteur cinema because it is the form in which the gaze really comes out and you have full freedom compared to other products ».

Who do you like about auteur cinema?
«Elio Petri in first place, but also Terry Gilliam. Of my contemporaries, I really like young people, even if their gaze often lacks the denunciation that, I’m sure, will come. I feel that talented authors like Giovannesi and Mainetti will soon have the opportunity to say something: the soul is the denunciation of a condition. Without it, the soul is not well ».

What is your greatest talent?
«Listening, a useful feature both for work and for the human being. Because of the social networks, we are all projected too much on ourselves: it would be the case to rediscover the spirituality of others “.
