The family of a 14-year-old girl in Chinawho died after entering a coronavirus quarantine center, is demanding justice, alleging that her pleas for medical help were ignored.
14-year-old Guo Jingjing had a fever two days after being transferred to the center quarantine in Ruzhou, Henan province last Friday, according to the BBC. A video of her shaking and convulsing in a bed has sparked outrage in China, which is insisting on strict controls over its pandemic coronavirus. Her family shared the images, asking for help and accountability.
Officials contacted by the BBC have yet to respond to reports of the 14-year-old’s cause of death, which remains unclear.
In a video, her father says that workers at the center did not provide care as her health deteriorated.
On Sunday, she began to have convulsions, to be dehydrated and to tremble “and the workers at the center did not take care of her, nor did they even inquire about her condition”, complains the father of the 14-year-old.
His video and another posted by the child’s aunt demanding justice have been heavily censored in the past 48 hours.
“I ask the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Disciplinary Commission to investigate the negligence of the Ruzhou government and give back my daughter’s life back,” the father added.
The BBC has confirmed Jingjing’s death and the circumstances surrounding it with other family members. They report that the child’s condition worsened significantly on Monday afternoon and he was taken to a hospital. However, her condition was critical and she could not be saved.
The 14-year-old’s death sparked a wave of online outrage at Chinese President Xi Jinping and his government’s coronavirus policies. “I’m outraged. Why didn’t they give her a pill?’ wrote one user with a second remarking that “it’s always been this way, nothing will ever change.”
