After that, most of them can be called to reserve units until age of 40 years, or even greater, in case of national emergency, and fight alongside regular troops in times of war. Reservists are also used in non-combat roles, meaning Yair’s lack of frontline experience doesn’t automatically exempt him.
Israelis abroad use WhatsApp chats to organize their return, sharing information about where to find available flights, said Yedidya Shalman, 26, who was in Thailand on his honeymoon when the war around Gaza broke out. “(We) created WhatsApp groups almost everywhere in the world, invited people to join them and slowly worked to bring as many reservists back to Israel as possible,” he told Reuters, explaining that he and his wife did not hesitate to stop their vacation. “Of course we didn’t think twice about it and right now we’re on our way home on an El Al plane,” he said via WhatsApp.
