Angra 2 nuclear power plant will be reconnected to the National Interconnected System on the 7th

The Angra 2 nuclear power plant, on the Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro, will resume operations next Sunday (7), when it will be reconnected to the National Interconnected System (SIN). The announcement was made this Monday (1st), by the state-owned Eletronuclear, a subsidiary of Eletrobras. The unit’s operations have been suspended since 10:54 am on the 29th (Friday).

According to Eletronuclear, the plant was disconnected from the SIN due to the disarming of the turbogenerator set. The fact occurred due to the automatic actuation of a protection circuit that integrates the main electric generator. Repairs have already started.

“All the plant’s systems operated as expected, keeping the unit in a safe condition,” informed the state-owned company, who also highlighted that the unit’s electrical supply is preserved.

According to the company, the reactor at Angra 2 will remain off until the plant is ready to resume operations. “The event did not present any risk to the safety of the plant, the company’s workers, the population or the environment”, concludes Eletronuclear.

Inaugurated in 2001, Angra 2 has an installed capacity of 1,35 thousand megawatts (MW), enough to meet 20% of the energy demand in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It integrates the Angra dos Reis nuclear complex, which also has Angra 1, with 651 MW of installed capacity.

The park also includes another unit, Angra 3, which had its works started in 1984, but which have been stopped since 2015, due to the corruption scandals of Operation Lava-Jato. Eletronuclear intends to resume construction of the building that will house the reactor and has already held a tender, which is still being analyzed by Eletrobras, for the release of funds.

With the intention of the federal government to privatize Eletrobras, nuclear operations will remain outside the negotiation, since the Federal Constitution determines that the activity can only be managed by the state.

Thus, the assets of Eletronuclear, as well as those of Itaipu Binacional, will be accounted for by a new state-owned company, Empresa Brasileira de Participações em Energia Nuclear e Binacional (ENBpar).
