Animation “Elementos” has 1st non-binary Pixar character; understand the identity

Pixar’s new animation, ‘Elementos’, premiered in Brazilian theaters last Thursday (15) and is already being historic.

The film is the first from the American studio to feature a non-binary trans character. The term refers to people who do not identify strictly with the feminine gender or with the masculine gender and, therefore, are outside cisnormativity. Non-binary people can still use the pronouns she/her, he/his, in addition to neutral language, such as elu/delu.

The one who broke the news was Kai Ava Hauser, who voiced Lake Ripple. On his social media, elu shared his excitement: “BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! I had the opportunity to play Pixar’s first non-binary character! Meet Lake! I voice Lake in the movie! I’m going to see it in theaters tonight with my friends, so you guys can see it in theaters too if you want.” Kai is also a non-binary person.

Directed by Peter Sohn, the film portrays the ‘Element City’, where the inhabitants of fire, water, earth and air coexist peacefully. Ember, a fiery woman, and Wade, who is part of the ‘water’ population, discover that despite being opposites, they have a lot in common. The film also talks about xenophobia, migration, and how love transcends differences.

In recent years, Disney has taken great steps towards representativeness. In 2022’s “Lightyear”, we saw Pixar’s first gay kiss. And in 2020, the first black protagonist with the animation “Soul”.
