On Sunday night (29), the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) – one of the most important awards in music – were delivered in New Jersey, United States.

The 2022 edition was especially marked by unprecedented achievements for Brazil.

Anitta, our current biggest pop star, was not only the first Brazilian in history to perform on the VMA stage, but also the first to win an award category from the traditional entertainment television channel.

Throughout the night, the VMAs also consecrated some of the biggest artists in the world, such as singer Harry Styles, for the album “Harry’s House”, and singer Taylor Swift, for the video for “All Too Well”.

Before taking the stage to receive her award and give her victory speech, Anitta showed her credentials in a performance of “Envolver”, the hit that placed her in Guinness for reaching the global top 1 of the most played songs on Spotify.

In addition to performing the traditional dance move that became a trend on TikTok, the singer from Honório Gurgel ended her performance extolling national funk.

“VMAs! Did you think I wasn’t going to shake my ass tonight?” questioned the singer, exporting her famous phrase “Did you think I wasn’t going to wiggle my ass today?”.

Anitta and her dancers turned the award show into a ball to the sound of a potpourri of “Bola Rebola”, “Movimento da Sanfoninha” and “Vai Malandra.

The performance was named the third best of the night by Billboard magazineand was also featured in other specialized vehicles such as rolling stone and pitchfork.

“I am born and raised in the ghetto”

Anitta competed for the VMA in the category of “Best Latin Music”.

She was just not the first Brazilian to be nominated for the award because, in 2020, the young Any Gabrielly, a member of Now United, competed for “Best Group”, but ended up losing to the South Koreans of BTS.

This time, “Girl from Rio” also had tough competitors in the running, like the Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, who ended up being considered the “Artist of the Year”.

Becky G with Karol G, Daddy Yankee, Farruko and J Balvin with Skrillex also competed.

Even so, the hit “Envolver” secured the first Brazilian victory in the history of the competition created in 1984.

In her victory speech (read the full text below), Anitta thanked her family and fans and highlighted the importance of Brazilian funk.

“Tonight I performed a genre that for many years was considered a crime in Brazil. I am born and raised in the ghetto of Brazil, and for anyone who was born there, we could never have thought that this would be possible,” she said.

Anitta’s speech on winning the VMAs

My God! I really didn’t expect this, I think I’m going to cry. I just want to say, for those who don’t know, this night is historic. It’s Brazil’s first time here. It is the first time that my country has been at an award like this. I want to thank my family and my fans. Tonight I performed here a genre that for many years was considered a crime in my country. I am born and raised in the ghetto of Brazil, and for those who were born there, we would never have thought that this would be possible. So thank you very much.
