Ankara attacks Paris over allegations of ‘repressed’ media

THE Turkey today accused France of “suppressing” the media, after Paris accused the Turkish state news agency Anadolu of “spreading false news” about the situation of Muslims in France.

On Tuesday, the General Secretariat of the Interministerial Committee on Crime Prevention and Radicalization (SG-CIPDR), a French organization, published a series of critical tweets against Anadolu, calling it a “propaganda tool”.

A variety of articles published on the website of the French-language edition of Anadolu denounce the “Islamophobia” from which, according to the authors of these articles, Muslims living in France.

«Anadolu is a propaganda tool that publishes articles on its website aggressively against France, with lies and slanderDenounced the SG-CIPDR.

Anadolu «does not stop spreading false news against France (…) Claiming that the state would target Muslim compatriots. That’s unacceptable, “he said.

These accusations provoked a strong reaction today from the director of the communication service of the Turkish presidency, Fahrettin Altun, who reiterated the accused France of Islamophobia and defended the Turkish news agency.

«We note that France continues its policy of discrimination and oppression against Muslims, as well as the media“, Altun said in his tweet.

“Stop inciting Islamophobia through state institutions. “Stop the oppression at the Anadolu agency,” he added.

This exchange of fire adds to the tensions between Turkey and France, whose relations have deteriorated in recent months.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has often calledthe “Islamophobic” French government, a recurring category in the Turkish media, including Anadolu.

The Anadolu Agency, founded in 1920 and publishing content in 13 languages, is regularly accused by critics of propaganda in favor of Erdogan and his party.

It regularly publishes columns and analyzes against countries with which Turkey does not have good relations.
