Turkish military diving teams safely detonated a floating naval mine in the Black Sea, the Ministry of Defense announced today, the third such mine found in its waters after the war in Ukraine.
Ukraine and Russia have been blamed for landmines in the Black Sea, and in late March, Turkish and Romanian military diving teams neutralized stray mines in their waters.
NATO member Turkey is bathed in the Black Sea, as are Russia and Ukraine, which Moscow invaded on February 24 in what it describes as a “special military operation.”
The Black Sea is used for the shipping of cereals, oil and petroleum products. Its territorial waters are shared by Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania and Turkey, as well as Ukraine and Russia.
The Black Sea is connected to the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean Sea through the Bosphorus Strait, which crosses the heart of Istanbul.
Stray mines pose a threat to ships crossing the Bosphorus and could cause damage if they hit ships, especially crude oil tankers.
Naval officials say the risk of floating mines on the Black Sea long shipping route increases the risks to merchant ships in the region, and governments need to ensure safe passage to maintain supply chains.
