THE Turkey informed NATO that the ratification of its accession Sweden to the alliance will not be completed in time to allow the country’s accession ceremony to take place during the alliance’s foreign ministers’ meeting next week, two sources familiar with the matter said yesterday, Wednesday.
Last week, the Turkish parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee delayed a vote on Sweden’s request to join the NATOto hold further talks on this matter.
“The committee is likely to resume its deliberations on the matter on Tuesday or Wednesday,” one of the sources said. NATO foreign ministers will meet on those days, November 28 and 29, and some in the Western alliance had hoped that the meeting this would signal the integration of Sweden, reports APE-MPE.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry was not immediately available to comment.
