Ankara reaction to Land Licensing in the Cypriot EEZ: ‘Turkish continental shelf violated’

“Turkey will never allow any foreign country, company or ship to conduct gas exploration in areas under its jurisdiction,” Ankara said in a statement. licensing of Plot 5 of the Cyprus EEZ to the ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum consortium, approved today by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that part of Plot 5 belongs to the so-called “Turkish continental shelf” which Cyprus is violating by granting research permits to Exxon Mobile and Qatar Petroleum.

He notes that the Greek Cypriot side once again ignores the rights of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots, which Ankara “will continue to resolutely defend”.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilkic told reporters that the Greek Cypriot move “clearly shows once again which side is really causing the tension in the eastern Mediterranean.”

As he said, “this unilateral step also ignores the rights of the Turkish Cypriots, the co-owners of the island”.
