This article on Anna Golubovskaja is published in issue 10 of Vanity Fair on newsstands until March 5, 2024.
Anna Golubovskaja is a Ukrainian photographer. At night, when the Russian bombings arrive, she has learned to be afraid of an unexpected fact: the relief she feels when she hears the alarm go off and finds herself alive, knowing full well that someone, far from her, has been hit anyway. Daria Bignardi talks about her story on page 24, also reporting a reflection from the photographer: «Causing terror is not just killing but scaring people. This is why they shoot at night, when a person is defenseless. But for two years we have remained human and considered the pain of others as our own. We resist, we hope, we believe. And that means that no matter what happens, we win every day.”
Anna's words also resonate strongly in the streets of Pisa, where the police use violence to sow fear and pain among young and pacifist demonstrators. Anna's words are heard in the conflict in Palestine, where devastation reigns instead of negotiations and ceasefires.
Anna's words also tell of a certain indifference well illustrated by a film nominated for multiple Oscars, an event to which we dedicate this cover.
It's about The area of interest, a film directed by Jonathan Glazer and based on the novel of the same name by Martin Amis set during the Second World War. The plot: a Nazi commander and his family live a peaceful daily life in an idyllic setting a few steps from the wall that divides them from a concentration camp.
This historical moment is very similar to the artificial and apparent calm described in the beautiful feature film. Because rights that take steps backwards, democracies that discover themselves to be repressive, political leaders that veer towards authoritarianism are all signs of a drift that does not bode well. And it matters little if many times these facts do not concern us closely: what happens to others, what happens beyond the wall, sooner or later will reach us too. On the contrary, what happens over there is already us. Anna's words are already us.
