Anna Karenina and others: Netflix ordered Russian TV series for the first time

The popular streaming service Netflix is gradually being mastered in Russia. After the full-fledged Russian localization appeared in 2020, Netflix thought about creating TV shows for a Russian-speaking audience and began negotiations with domestic producers. This was announced on Monday, April 12, by Kommersant, citing its own informed sources.

According to the publication, Netflix is currently in talks with Russian producers to shoot at least four or five projects. The service has already signed a contract with the studio 1-2-3 Production, which is part of Gazprom-Media, for a modern adaptation of Anna Karenina. Here I must say that this studio is known for such projects as “Dyatlov Pass” and “Epidemic”, and Netflix previously bought the rights to the second of them.

The series based on the novel by Lev Tolstov is not the only project that Netflix has already agreed to create with Russian filmmakers. So, the company “Russkoe”, which is one of the main partners of the TV channel “Russia 1”, will be engaged in the filming of a drama series about the 90s of the last century according to the script of Mikhail Shprits. Negotiations are also underway with the “Hydrogen” studio and “Chik” director Eduard Oganesyan, “Sreda” company Alexander Tsekalo, Star Media Vlad Ryashin, Yellow, Black & White (YBW) and director Klim Shipenko.

Representatives of the three above-mentioned Russian companies declined to comment on this matter. And only Klim Shipenko, Vlad Ryashin and the general director of Sreda Ivan Samokhvalov confirmed the fact of negotiations on cooperation, noting that they did not reach specific agreements with Netflix. And Netflix left the journalists’ request unanswered at all.

The cost of projects that domestic producers will work on is not disclosed, like most other details. The interlocutors of Kommersant only noted that Netlix is usually very demanding in the production of products for its platform, tightly controlling every shot taken and every penny spent.
