The actress Anne Hathaway spoke about the miscarriage she suffered in 2015 and about the “infertility and conception hell” in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Announcing her second pregnancy in an Instagram post in 2019, the actress captioned the photo: “For everyone going through the hell of infertility and conception, know that it has not been a straight line in any of my pregnancies. Sending you lots of love.”
In the interview, Hathaway explained that due to the difficulty and painful process of trying to get pregnant, she felt that “it would be disingenuous to post something so happy when I know the story is much more nuanced than that for everyone.”
“The first time it didn’t work for me” , recalled Anne Hathaway, referring to the miscarriage she suffered in 2015, while she was performing in a play. She told her friends what had happened after performing, when they came to visit her backstage.
“It was too much to stay calm when I was on stage pretending everything was fine. I had to be real,” she explained. “It's very difficult to want something so badly and wonder if you're doing something wrong.”
After that moment, she decided that she should share her experience with other women, and was surprised to learn that many of her friends had gone through similar experiences .
“I thought: Where is this information? Why do we feel so needlessly isolated? This is where we suffer damage. So I decided I was going to talk about it,” she added.
“What broke my heart and surprised me and gave me hope was that for three years after that, almost every day, some woman came up to me crying and I just hugged her because she was carrying this [dor] around and suddenly, it wasn’t all just her anymore”, revealed the actress.
