The consumer price index (CPI, its acronym in English) of Argentina advanced 6% in January compared to December, reported this Tuesday (14) the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec). The result represents an acceleration in relation to the monthly advance of 5.1% in the previous month.
Year-on-year, Argentine consumer inflation jumped 98.8% in the 12 months through January, also above December’s 94.8% increase.
The biggest increase in the month of January was registered in the recreation and culture division (9%), mainly due to the increase in tourist services —as a result of the vacation period—, and cable TV services.
Housing, water, electricity and other fuels also pressured the index, up 8%, mainly driven by the increase in public service tariffs. The communications sector also rose 8%, driven by increases in telephone and internet services.
Food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 6.8%, according to Indec. Within the division, the institute highlights the increase in seasonal prices of fruits and vegetables, tubers and legumes.
The two sectors with the lowest change in January were apparel and footwear (2.3%) and education (1.1%).
