Consumer prices in Chile rose 7.7 percent year-on-year in January amid higher prices for transport, food and non-alcoholic beverages, the country’s statistical office (INE) said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
INE data place inflation well above the central bank’s target of 2% to 4%.
In January, prices rose 1.2%, twice as fast as analysts had predicted, with consumer prices rising 0.6% in the first month of 2022.
Air travel prices jumped 10.9% in January, while new car prices rose 2.9% and intercity tickets rose 11.2%.
In January, the country’s central bank raised interest rates for the past 20 years, raising interest rates by 150 basis points above expectations to 5.5%.
