Another bomb found in Belgorod, Russian city accidentally hit by Russians

More than 3,000 people were evacuated on Saturday (22) from residential buildings in the Russian city of Belgorod, after a bomb was found near an area that was accidentally bombed by the Russian air force earlier this week, state media reported. Russia.

Explosives experts assessed the device and said there was no danger of an explosion, according to the TASS news agency.

Belgorod regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on his Telegram channel that the bomb had already been removed from the area and residents were returning to their apartments.

On Thursday night, a Russian warplane dropped a bomb on Belgorod – a city of more than 400,000 near the Ukrainian border – leaving a large crater, throwing a car off a roof and damaging nearby buildings. .

Local authorities said that two people were injured in the blast.

State media blamed an “accidental” or “emergency” drop of ammunition for the incident.

It has not been confirmed whether the device discovered this weekend was also scrapped on Thursday.

Peter Layton, a visiting researcher at the Griffith Asia Institute and a former Royal Australian Air Force officer, said the incident on Thursday was “strange”. He pointed out that a pilot would normally drop munitions in a “safe” mode to not detonate and try to do so in an unpopulated area.

The Belgorod region has been the scene of several explosions and bombings since the invasion of neighboring Ukraine by Russia in February 2022. The city was one of the areas of concentration of Russian troops before the invasion.
